The Department of Orthopaedic and Spine Surgery of Lahore Medical & Dental College is based at Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital, Lahore. A fully functional Trauma & Orthopaedic unit has always been an essential part of every teaching hospital. This unit has grown very rapidly since its inception, almost twelve years ago. The department is staffed with 03 Professors, 03 Assistant Professors, 03 Senior Registrars & 26 Resident Medical Officers.
The Unit is headed by Prof. Amer Aziz, a world renowned Orthopaedic & Spine Surgeon.
The Unit is recognized by Pakistan Medical & Dental Council (PMDC) for post graduate study.
The number of spine and joint replacement surgeries is much more than the total number of such surgries performed all over the Lahore. Pakistan Orthopaedic Association (POA) has declared our nit "A Center of Excellence" for Spine surgery in Pakistan. The unit is one of the three department of pakistan which is recognized by Pakistan Arthroplasty Society (PAS).
Trauma cases landing in emergency are operated on the same day of admission. This allows more cold cases on the morning list. That is why, our per bed/day turnover is much more than other departments of this as well as other hospitals. Surgical Implant Generation Network, USA provides free implants to trauma patients in recognition of hospital services.
The procedures which are done the same day in the unit include the following:
- Close manipulation plus POP cast of all fractures.
- Debridement, wound closures.
- External Fixation.
- Intramedullary nailing.
- Closed as well as open reduction of all dislocations.
- ORIF with compression plates.
- Posterior decompression for Cauda Equina Syndrome.
- Pedicle screw fixation for spine trauma.
Apart from teaching, training and operative workload, the unit has a busy academic programme as well. Research papers by the unit staff are presented at national and international orthopaedic conferences regularly and many of these papers have also been published in various journals.
