At Ghurki Trust Teaching Hospital (GTTH) in Lahore, a compassionate and technologically advanced cochlear implant program has made a significant impact on children with profound hearing loss. In August 2024, GTTH partnered with the International Medical Relief Agency (IMRA) to conduct free cochlear implant surgeries for six children, performed by a collaborative team including UK-based ENT specialist Dr. Noveed Ahmed and GTTH experts such as Dr. Athar Adnan and Dr. Shaukat Malik. These life-changing procedures involved surgically implanting cochlear devices that bypass the damaged parts of the ear to directly stimulate the auditory nerves, enabling hearing and speech development. Remarkably, all surgeries—valued at roughly US $25,000 to $30,000 per case were offered completely free of charge. The hospital emphasized full support throughout the process, including postoperative care and speech therapy, with expectations that the children could hear and speak naturally within a couple of years and join mainstream schooling by age three .Additionally, GTTH had conducted a similar initiative in October 2022, when three children received cochlear implants, another milestone made possible with IMRA’s involvement The program showcases GTTH’s commitment to blending advanced medical procedures with humanitarian service—providing critical, high-cost care to children who otherwise could not afford it.
